8 Steps to Cleaning Out Your Closet

How many of you set a resolution to be more clean? Here's a little something to help. Every time I get a big influx of clothes I feel the need to toss some out. I guess I am just one of those people that really hates clutter...I though I would put together how I clean out my closet and some rules to live by if you happen to be a bit of a hoarder. I used to be really bad at this but since I am basically OCD about having things clean I have learned a lot of good tips.
I clean out my closet every time I get more than one new article of clothing. Since Christmas seems to bring in a lot of new items it's a perfect time to do this...

Step 1: Tops
I always look through and grab the obvious things that I am done wearing. The hard part is weeding out the things you still like but won't wear anymore. I do this by using a test. If I won't consider wearing it in the next week or so then out it goes. Trust me it's hard but I guarantee you won't miss it!

Step 2: Bottoms
I usually like to keep 2 or 3 pairs of jeans and toss any old or ill fitting ones. With colored pants I only keep the ones that I would wear within the week. For sweats and leggings I do the same process. As a sickie I have a lot of comfy clothes so I try to be good at tossing out any old sweats.

Step 3: Dresses and Skirts
I don't go through these as often because I only get maybe one new dress a year. However, this is a recipe for some really old dresses and skirts left in my closet. I get rid of anything that I have had for five years and don't wear anymore. If I still wear it but probably shouldn't then I toss it. If it is so out of style that my sister would laugh at me then I toss it. You get the point...

 Step 4: Socks and Intimates
I get tons of socks! Guys for real. I got like 6 pairs this Christmas and I didn't buy any of them. The only socks I buy for myself are compression socks and some exercise socks. My rule with socks and underwear is I throw out anything that has holes. Just get rid of them! Seriously, if they are that worn out you should probably get new pairs anyway. I also have a lot of fluffy socks. I LOVE THEM. Ha ha so I have like a thousand. I throw out anything that is worn down and no longer fluffy. You can do this process with any of your intimates.

Step 5: Shoes
Yes shoes are part of the cleaning your closet process. I get rid of anything I haven't worn in a month...except for high heels that I wear for special occasions or Sundays. If my tennis shoes or my every day shoes are really worn out, I toss them. If you need shoes that bad then got to Payless. They are like my go to for shoes because they are such good prices. I like to buy cheap shoes and filter through them often.

Step 6: Pajamas and Randoms
I usually go through my pajamas after Christmas because I always get new ones Christmas eve. I have some p.j.s from high school still. If you are like me then toss anything that is five years old. I usually keep them for a couple of years because I only buy actual pajamas once a year. In the summer I basically sleep in t- shirts. I toss anything that is old or too small. I always want to keep my t-shirts from forever ago. I tell myself that I will make a quilt with them. IT NEVER HAPPENS... ha ha just toss them...unless you're an avid quilter. I also go through belts, hats and even jewelry. It's all about getting rid of anything you don't need, want or miss.

Step 7: Organize
I am really weird when it comes to this step. Usually I color code all my shirts. I know...This time I color coded in sections. I did t-shirts, nice shirts, button ups, sweaters, sweatshirts and jackets, skirts and dresses. I usually fold my pants. I do jeans and colors separately and pajamas either in a drawer or folded. I fold exercise and comfy clothes in a drawer and socks and underwear. I like to have a bucket in my closet for belts and hats. I also keep a box for tights and slips. The goal of this step is to make everything easy to find and easy to put away.

Step 8: Exceptions
I do make a few exceptions when I clean out the closet. Number one being, I focus mostly on the season I am in. I live in Utah so I have lots of winter clothes and lots of summer clothes. I still clean out both but if it is winter I am not going to toss out all my summer shirts just because I wouldn't wear them in a week. Same goes vice versa. Number two, I keep a few pieces for special occasions. I do have some shirts and shoes that I only wear for certain things. This rule applies to seasonal clothes too.

I promise if you get rid of some things you won't miss them. It's healthy to get rid of stuff. For some reason as humans we are natural hoarders but we don't need to be. Even if we are in a survival situation you probably are never going to grab that shirt that you never wear. Plus after you go through everything you can sell your nice stuff for money or if you're like me then you can take it to your nearset thrift store. I have a little sister and neighbor that also happily except my hand me downs. Good luck going through your closet! You got this! Please enjoy this pic of my husband in the shirt we got at a white elephant...Hopefully he will throw it out soon!
